One of the greatest perks to living in Arizona is that you can drive to surf and snow in a few short hours. The beaches of San Diego are just a 5.5 hour drive away! The perfect weekend road trip!
We visit San Diego fairly often and Holly and Tom lived in San Diego for many years, so we have some favorites that we can share with you.
There are plenty of fabulous hotels to choose from, but we’ll just share our top few!
San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina – Holly’s first job out of college was at this Marriott, so it holds fond memories. It’s also a great hotel! You can rent boats at the Marina, walk to the gaslamp district or Seaport Village, plus the hotel amenities are fantastic. Gorgeous pool, great restaurants, tennis and more!
Del Mar Motel – If you want to literally step out your door to the beach, then this is a favorite spot. You’re also next to the Poseidon Restaurant (a favorite) and just a few blocks from the park and downtown Del Mar shops. If you’re going to the races or the Fair, this is also a great nearby spot.
Manchester Grand Hyatt – This hotel is located adjacent the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina. Be sure to check out the bar on the top floor – amazing views! If you don’t stay at the hotel, it’s worth the visit to see the view and enjoy a glass of wine!
What about the beaches?
Moonlight Beach – Located in Encinitas, this is a favorite for many reasons. They have decent parking, bathroom facilities, a walk-up food counter and you can rent beach equipment like chairs, umbrella’s and boogie boards. There is also an adjacent park for the little ones to enjoy and walking distance to shops and restaurants. For the best ice cream cone ever…walk to Handel’s.
Del Mar Beach – Holly spent her high school years on this beach, so again, great memories. It’s also a favorite if you like to boogie board or body surf. The waves are great, but not crazy and there is a lot of beach space. There is also a little walk-up food, drink and ice cream counter in the Poseidon parking lot, Even better…get lunch or a cocktail at the Poseidon!
Pacific & Mission Beach – This is a great beach destination if you’d like a like of shopping and dining options nearby. You can walk along the boardwalk and enjoy all types of food and drink while viewing the surf and sand!
Fabulous restaurants too! We’ll just share our top picks!
Poseidon – Located on the Del Mar Beach! Great beach views and food too!
